What Some Car Repair Services May Not Want You To Know |
There are many honest and friendly car repair businesses in town. Just like ours. There are also many that may appear friendly but may do things that are not in your best interest. With that in mind we thought the best way to protect you is to give
you a few tips on what to watch for. When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, like oil changes for under $10. We've all seen the rising gas prices at the pumps, so how can some places sell oil so cheap? The answer is that once your vehicle is on the lift, they hit you with a long, expensive list of services they claim you immediately need. Likewise, buy-one-tire-get-one-free deals
inevitably come with an array of hidden services you must purchase to qualify, which usually end up costing the same as the savings. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you're told a part on your vehicle is bad, ask to see it and for an explanation of how it is malfunctioning. Ask to see the replacement part as well. This can provide you with a clear picture of how the part is supposed to function.
An educated consumer is a businessman's best friend. Beware of any one who refuses to meet your inquiries. |
FAQs About Brake Repairs
|
What are the components that make up my brake system? Brake systems consist of a master cylinder, pads/shoes, rotors/drums, calipers/wheel cylinders, and hoses. Most vehicles are also equipped with a power booster and anti lock brake sensors.
How do they work? When you step on the brake pedal, the master cylinder presses the brake fluid through the lines and hoses. If your vehicle has a power booster, it is there to reduce the amount of pressure you must apply to the pedal to stop. The fluid pushes the caliper's pistons out, which clamps the brake pads down on either side of the rotor. The rotor rotates with the wheels. The friction
created by the pads dragging on the rotors slows the wheels and brings the vehicle to a stop.
How do I know if I need brakes? Most vehicles come equipped with an Audible Wear Indicator. This is a little metal tab that that rubs against the rotor when the brake pad wears low. The friction creates a high pitched squeal at low speeds letting you know it's time to replace the pads.
How long can I drive after the Audible Wear Indicators begin to sound? The Audible Wear Indicators are there to let you know to change the pads immediately. If left unchecked, the next sound you will hear is grinding. This is the sound of the metal behind the pads digging into the brake rotors.
